These houses were home to a whitewasher, a carpenter, and a washerwoman, among others.

As on a number of blocks in the neighborhood, African-Americans were a significant part of the population on this block.  The 1872 directory notes that Joshua Johnson, on the northwest corner, and Martha James, near the opposite corner, were "col." (colored).
